Pierre-Jean Rémy Biography

Pierre-Jean Rémy is the pen-name of Jean-Pierre Angremy (21 March 1937 – 28 April 2010) who was a French diplomat, novelist, and essayist. He was elected to the Académie française on 16 June 1988, and won the 1986 Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française for his novel Une ville immortelle. Rémy was born in Angoulême, Charente, where he received his primary and secondary education.

His studies at Lycée Condorcet were steeped in Latin, Greek, and literature. Beginning in 1955, Rémy studied in Paris at the Institute of Political Studies (Institut d'études politiques), the Faculty of Law (Faculté de droit) of the University of Paris (licence-economic science), and the Sorbonne (sociology). As a Fulbright program scholar, Rémy served as an assistant to the sociologist Herbert Marcuse at Brandeis University in Massachusetts from 1958-59 before returning to Paris to finish his studies at the École nationale d'istration (ENA) in 1963 (class of "Saint-Just").
