11 Favorite Dance Scenes in Rom-Coms

Sharon Knolle
April 23, 2019 - 1 min read

It's been 15 years since Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo danced to "Thriller" in "13 Going on 30," a good time to salute our favorite dance scenes in rom-coms.

'Charlie's Angels' (2000)

When Natalie (Cameron Diaz) is asked to dance on stage to “Baby Got Back” at "Soul Train," the puzzled crowd at first isn't into her old school moves like The Robot. But her pure enthusiasm soon has the whole room cheering. Go white girl! We also get a Natalie fantasy dance sequence set to "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" and all three angels busting a move to "Can't Touch This." It's an embarrassment of riches.

'Earth Girls Are Easy' (1988)

Zeebo (Marlon Wayans) easily wins a dance-off with some (literally) smoking moves in our favorite alien rom-com.

'10 Things I Hate About You' (1999)

To win back Kat (Juila Stiles), Patrick performs "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in front of the whole school. Complete with some impressive Broadway stylings. And handily outrunning the school security guards. We also love Kat's drunken party dance to Biggie's "Hypnotize."

'Romy and Michele's High School Reunion' (1997)

So Romy and Michele didn't actually invent Post-Its. They and wealthy Sandy Frink (Alan Cumming), steal the show at their reunion with a pas de trois to Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time."

'13 Going on 30' (2004)

Like Natalie in "Charlie's Angels," Jenna (Jennifer Garner)'s sheer enthusiasm gets everyone going on the dance floor to "Thriller," even a reluctant Matty (Mark Ruffalo).

'Isn't It Romantic' (2019)

How does Natalie (Rebel Wilson) know she's in a romantic comedy? Because everyone spontaneously breaks out into a synchronized dance, of course!

'Love, Simon' (2018)

Before Simon (Nick Robinson) officially comes out, he imagines what his big, gay life would be like: Just like Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody” video, naturally.

'Funny Face' (1957)

Serious thinker-turned-model Jo (Audrey Hepburn) spots a chance to express herself through music in a hilarious modern routine. Her costar Fred Astaire (ing himself off as a beatnik) does a Fosse-esque dance at one point, even going up the stairs on his knees.

'Bride and Prejudice' (2004)

Yep, that's Naveen Andrews (Sayid from "Lost") leading the men in a Bollywood number from this fun update on "Pride and Prejudice."

'500 Days of Summer' (2009)

When you're in love, complete strangers naturally start dancing along with you to Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams Come True." There's even an animated bluebird straight out of "Snow White."

'The Big Lebowski' (1988)

The Dude (Jeff Bridges) has some pretty inspired visions, including this elaborate musical number set to Kenny Rogers' "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In." It's pure fun as the Coen Bros pay homage to classic musicals in their own quirky way.
