The 9 Best New TV Shows of 2016

Moviefone
December 1, 2016 - 1 min read

TV has been living in a Golden Age for a while now, and it feels like its only getting better every year. Case in point: 2016. While there were a flurry of flops that didn't make it to another season, we have to give credit to the standouts who got us talking, binging, and suddenly craving Eggos. Here are the best new series of 2016.

'Stranger Things'

Is "Eleven" still just the number after ten to you? Then you've probably been living under a rock. The edge-of-your-seat '80s throwback is probably one of the most talked-about shows in recent memory, spawning tons of nostalgia, a new generation's appreciation for Winona Ryder (rejoice!), and inspiration for pretty much everyone's Halloween costumes.

'This Is Us'

It's been too long since we filled that "Parenthood"-sized hole in our hearts with a solid American household drama that hits us right in the gut. How could you not fall in love with these people? Just be sure to have tissues with you. Every. Darn. Episode. Go Big Three!

'American Crime Story'

People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story" made us feel like we were watching a mini movie every week. Even though the story was familiar, the themes felt fresh and it took the narrative to thought-provoking and relevant heights.

'Search Party'

TBS managed to strike the right balance between absurd comedy and engaging mystery with "Search Party." The series is a spot-on representation of self-obsessed, lost, and clueless New York millennials (yes, we know this is a crowded TV genre now), except you'll find yourself rooting for the endlessly entertaining leads like they're your BFFs.

'Atlanta'

Even if you know much about Atlanta's hip hop scene or the music industry, you will probably find something about "Atlanta" to feel connected to. The commentary ranges from big issues like race and class, to as small as not being able to afford a proper date. The beautifully filmed show's illustration of the little things that make up a contemporary American experience gives it real heart.

'Westworld'

Turns out, audiences like their Westerns with a side of robot. "Westworld" is a knotty and mesmerizing HBO tour de force, which has satisfyingly held over "Game of Thrones" fans and dominated the water cooler since its first frame. Every episode serves as a piece to the deepest, darkest, and most addictive puzzle ever.

'Fleabag'

Amazon's "Fleabag" is a prime example that you can love a show even if its main character is messy, flawed, and often despicable. The British comedy will have you howling with laughter as you follow the heartbreaking and hilarious journey of a London woman who is barely keeping her head above water. It may be uncomfortable and awkward, but so is life.

'Marvel's Luke Cage'

Superhero shows are pretty much dominating the TV world right now, but "Luke Cage" is definitely one of the best out there. Following "Jessica Jones" (one of our favorite Freshman series from last year), "Cage" is gritty, smart, stylish, and devoid of convention. Looks like Netflix does Marvel right.

'Insecure'

Insecure." Rae uniquely paints her picture of relationships, sex, coming-of-age, and what it means to be a modern black twenty-something woman with unbridled honesty and razor-sharp humor.
