Every Critical ‘Game of Thrones’ Death, Ranked From 'Good Riddance' to 'I Can’t Do This Anymore'

Moviefone
April 14, 2016 - 1 min read

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Which means, on HBO's "Game of Thrones," no one is safe. Ever. Here are the 25 most important deaths from the series' first five seasons, ranked from "good riddance" to "why am I doing this to myself?!" (WARNING: Crazy huge spoilers ahead.)

Joffrey Baratheon

Bye, Felicia. We love to see you go and we love to watch you leave. Joffrey was the guy you couldn't even love to hate, because we all hated him too much. He killed for senselessly and found much delight in the torment of others. Even Cersei was a little afraid of him -- and she's not afraid of anything (especially after a few goblets of wine).

Tywin Lannister

Getting killed on the toilet was very fitting for this piece of crap.

Viserys Targaryen

The first big death that made us realize the thirst for blood on "Game of Thrones" was very real.

Stannis Baratheon

If only he'd died before he was able to do all the horrible things he did. So many lives would've been spared.

Lysa Arryn

We all have those aunts. You know, the ones who breastfeed their 10-year-olds and have giant holes in their homes that are used to push people to their deaths. Oh wait, no we don't. She was the worst.

The Mountain

He was good at fighting, but he was an all-around garbage human who killed and raped innocent people. We weren't sad at all to see him go. Zombie Mountain is way better.

Renly Baratheon

Renly wasn't a bad guy, he was just a pretty forgettable character with an awesome, magic death.

Jeor Mormont

The Old Bear was a nice enough man and a pretty good leader. Unfortunately, his men still turned on him. We weren't rooting for his death, but we can't say we particularly miss him.

Maester Aemon Targaryen

One of the only people in Westeros to ever die from natural causes, Maester Aemon was dedicated to the Night's Watch. He defended Jon when he needed it and was well-liked by everyone around him. We'll miss him a little bit.

The Hound

We had a love-hate relationship with The Hound. He made us laugh and served up some pretty entertaining scenes, becoming a better person as time went on. He originally captured Arya for the ransom money, but when that didn't work out, he kept her around as a travel buddy. Most in Westeros would've just killed Arya after she became useless.

Selyse Baratheon

Selyse was never our favorite, and when it came time to sacrifice her daughter to R'hllor, she was all for it... at first. Her redemption came when her motherly instincts kicked in and she tried to save her daughter from certain death. She was so distraught, she killed herself.

Robert Baratheon

Good old Robert only appeared in seven episodes, so we didn't really have time to get truly attached to him. His death sparked the war, so a lot of people would still be alive if he didn't kick the bucket.

Ros

Poor, beautiful Ros. She was a fiery red-head and was always very concerned about keeping Sansa safe. She wasn't a main character, but watching Joffrey kill her so brutally was not fun.

Shae

Shae, Shae, Shae. How we loved you at first. You fooled both us and Tyrion, making us care about you -- only to betray us in the end. Even after all that, we're still sad you're gone.

Jojen Reed

No one wants to watch the little boy from "Love Actually" die. It was a pretty epic way to go, though.

Myrcella Baratheon

We didn't know Myrcella very well, but we could tell how special she was because mommy Cersei and daddy Jaime loved her so dearly. She lived and died as a pawn for others' gain, and she deserved so much more.

Khal Drogo

Our sun and stars, Khal Drogo. He was introduced as a beast, but, just like Daenerys, we grew to love him. We still get pangs of sadness when we his untimely demise.

Ygritte

Jon Snow was never more interesting than when he was with the feisty Ygritte. They loved each other!!! Ugh, we're so upset.

Shireen Baratheon

This poor child. Stannis was a garbage man doing garbage things, but his relationship with Shireen always made you kind of like him -- even if only for a few minutes. Then he had to go and betray her in the worst way possible. Her death was one of the most disturbing scenes to ever hit the small screen. We're still recovering.

Oberyn Martell

This one hurt A LOT. When Oberyn first appeared, he added a fun, comic element that "Game of Thrones" had been lacking; he was the light in a dark room. So when he got all Inigo Montoya, we knew it wasn't going to end well. Fans are still trying to fill the Oberyn-sized hole in their hearts.

Jon Snow

This would be more sad if he was 100% dead, but anyone who's paying attention knows that we have yet to see the official end of Jon Snow.

Talisa Stark

The first death from the emotionally-draining "Red Wedding" episode punched us right in the face. Watching Robb Stark cry over her body knowing he was dying as well kickstarted our tears.

Robb Stark

All the feels. Robb was our knight in shining armor. He was doing his best to avenge his father's death and return the realms to some kind of stability. He was a genuinely good dude. Not only did he die, he had to watch the love of his life and unborn baby bleed out. We wouldn't wish that on our worst enemy.

Ned Stark

When Ned Stark died, that's when you knew that NO ONE was safe on "Game of Thrones." We were naive before this. We thought, "Oh, he's Ned Stark, he's going to get out of this. It's going to be fine." Well, it wasn't fine, and he got beheaded right in front of a screaming Sansa and a horrified Arya.

Catelyn Stark

The death that made us ask, "Why do we watch this show? Why do we do this to ourselves?" From the moment the doors were closed and "The Rains of Castamere" began to play, Catelyn knew sh-t was about to get real, and she had to stand there and watch the loves of her life die right in front of her. She'd already lost her husband, her daughters were presumed dead, and then she's made to watch son Robb die right in front of her. "The Red Wedding" is the reason we have trust issues.
