The 14 Worst Horror Movies Set in Space, Ranked From Least to Most Terrible

Moviefone
November 12, 2018 - 1 min read

"Jason X" and "Alien 3" get a deserved bad rap. Why? Like rest of these movies on this list, both are kings atop the pile of bad, space-set slasher flicks. Here are a few intergalactic horror films you want to shove out an airlock.

14. 'Alien 3' (1993)

Another problem-plagued film set in the "Alien" universe, David Fincher's first feature is arguably his worst. Despite solid visuals and an engaging opening sequence, this threequel almost killed the franchise.

13. 'Prometheus' (2012)

The film's trailer suggested we'd get Ridley Scott's great return to the "Alien" universe with this much-anticipated prequel. Instead, to quote the trailer, "we were so, so wrong." Because what we got was an expensive, intermittently-engaging misfire at war with being an "Alien" prequel and it's own thing.

12. 'Alien: Covenant' (2017)

Ridley Scott is the only one who really cares about the world before "Alien" started. This prequel/reboot to the prequel that was "Prometheus" only puts more distance between connecting audiences to the events of the 1979 original; the movie seems driven by a mandate to backfill without ever bridging the gap between this universe and Ellen Ripley's. It's made all the more insufferable by a slasher movie-y second half undone by supposed smart characters acting very stupid (just like in "Prometheus") and a twist ending the movie thinks is way cooler and more surprising than it really is.

11. 'Event Horizon' (1997)

Yeah, we used to think this movie was the sh**, too. But upon rewatching it, we realized it's just sh**. It gets high marks for a scary-cool production design, especially that evil gyroscope of an engine core, and for scaring all the crap out of us with its flashety-flash cuts to a murder-fueled Hellscape.

10. 'Alien: Resurrection' (1997)

We'd look sad, too, if we killed the "Alien" franchise. Not even a script by Joss Whedon could save the movie from imploding. But bonus points for a unique take on cloning Ripley as an alien-human hybrid.

9. 'Critters 4' (1992)

Officially entering "worst" territory, "Critters 4" (the fourth entry of this "Gremlins" rip-off franchise) take a very low-budget trip into space. Which is kinda weird that it didn't start off here, since the Critters are from space.

8. 'Pandorum' (2009)

Way past worst now... I mean, just look at this thing. It's like the offspring of an alien and a Mad Max'd Mini-Me. Ben Foster wake up, naturally, with no memory of who they are or what they are supposed to be doing. Soon, they succumb to Space Madness basically and we're bored now.

7. 'Apollo 18' (2011)

Found-footage horror, about what really happened to the scrapped Apollo 18 mission, sounded like a good idea. Then we saw the movie.

6. 'Supernova' (2000)

Yes, a major studio released a movie with that thing pictured as a robot. The only thing worse than the production design is the languid story and less-than-stellar special effects. BUT we do get an abs-tastic James Spader, so there's that.

5. 'John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars' (2001)

Um. So, this happened. RIP, John Carpenter's career.

4. 'Hellraiser: Bloodline' (1996)

Pinhead's fourth attempt to swallow our souls fails as a movie, but succeeds at accomplishing a new level of terrible. Yay...?

3. 'Lifeforce' (1985)

Yes, this cult movie is about space vampires. And no, we can't say that with a straight face either. (If you dare to watch it, you'll catch a pre-"Star Trek" Patrick Stewart!)

2. 'Jason X' (2001)

"Evil gets an upgrade" and Jason Voorhees goes to space. But wait, you say - what can possibly top this as the worst horror movie set in space?

1. 'Leprechaun 4: In Space' (1997)

'Nuff said.
